Noel Gallagher's post-Oasis career was given a resounding vote of confidence by British music buyers Sunday (23) when his self-titled album with new group the High Flying Birds, on the Sour Mash label, debuted at No. 1 with sales of 122,000, according to the Official Charts Company. Rihanna's "We Found Love," featuring Calvin Harris, began its third week atop the singles chart.
"Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds" was introduced by two singles last month, "The Death of You and Me," which reached No. 15, and "AKA What A Life!," which peaked at No. 20 and rebounded 55-24 on the new chart. The band played their first official gig last night (Sunday) at Dublin's Olympia Theatre, to be followed by further U.K. dates and then a North American tour from Nov. 5 and European gigs from Nov. 26. The album is released in North America by Mercury/Island Nov. 8.
