1000 No. 1s: Watch Jason Derulo Chat About Topping The Hot 100

1000 No. 1s Video Series Day 17:
Jason Derulo Talks About Topping the Hot 100

2011 was the year that Billboard celebrated the 1000th No. 1 song on the Hot 100. As we look back on this year in music, we're celebrating that milestone with a month-long series of videos --- one for each day of December -- chatting with 31 of the hitmakers who rocketed to the top of the chart since its inception in 1958. SEE THE FULL CHART HERE.

On day 17 of our 1,000 Hot No. 1s video series, we move from yesterday's pop-rock confection -- "Girlfriend" by Avril Lavigne -- to bittersweet R&B-inflected pop as we chat with Jason Derulo about his 2009 No. 1, "Whatcha Say." "They say the odds of your first single going No. 1 are like being hit by lightning seven times" Derulo laughs. "It's amazing because fans are what makes a No. 1 hit."

His first taste of big chart love, Derulo's "Whatcha Say" slid to No. 1 on Nov. 14, 2009, replacing Owl City's "Fireflies" at the pinnacle of the chart. The Miami songwriter/performer has gone on to score two further top 10s on the Hot 100.

Be sure to come back tomorrow (Dec. 18) for the next 1000 No. 1s video: Far East Movement talks about their No. 1, "Like a G6."
