The latest single for the BBC's Comic Relief charity yesterday became the 11th in the series to hit No. 1 in the U.K., while U2's "No Line On The Horizon" (Mercury/Universal) started a second week atop the album chart.
The single, also on Mercury, is a remake of Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers' 1983 smash "Islands In The Stream," now credited to Vanessa Jenkins & Bryn West, characters in the BBC's hit comedy series "Gavin & Stacey," as played by Ruth Jones and Rob Brydon. The new version, renamed "(Barry) Islands In The Stream" in reference to the Welsh district in which the series is partly set, features guest appearances by Tom Jones and Robin Gibb, who co-wrote the original with brothers Barry and Maurice. It was produced by veteran sideman Hugh Padgham.
The single release grew from a performance of the song by the characters in the second series of "Gavin & Stacey." The 18 official singles for Comic Relief to date have raised some £5.5 million for the charity, according to the BBC.
