Tom Odell, Icona Pop Debut Atop U.K. Charts; Glastonbury Festival Sparks Sales Lifts
Tom Odell, the British singer-songwriter who won the Critics’ Choice title at the 2013 BRIT Awards, opened at No. 1 on the new U.K. album chart yesterday (June 30) with his debut set “Long Way Down” (Columbia/Sony Music Entertainment).
Meanwhile, Swedish duo Icona Pop’s international hit “I Love It” (Atlantic/Warner Music), featuring Charlie XIX, entered at the top of the singles chart.
Odell’s first album follows his breakthrough hit single “Another Love,” which debuted at No. 10 last week, falling two places on the new chart, and is included on “Long Way Down.” Rod Stewart’s “Time” (Capitol/Decca/Universal) continued its strong performance by bouncing back 4-2, as did Brighton-based singer-writer Passenger’s “All The Little Lights” (Nettwerk) with a 5-3 climb.
Michael Bublé’s “To Be Loved” (Reprise/Warner Music) was on the rise again with a 14-4 move, while Jake Bugg’s Friday performance at the Glastonbury Festival helped fuel a 27-5 rebound. Last week’s No. 1 artist album, Kanye West’s “Yeezus” (Def Jam/Universal), fell to No. 6.
Friday night’s Pyramid Stage headliners at Glastonbury, Arctic Monkeys, also enjoyed refreshed sales, their 2006 debut album “Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not” (Domino) racing 180-32 and the 2007 follow-up “Favourite Worst Nightmare” reappearing at No. 62. The much-vaunted Saturday night headline appearance of the Rolling Stones started only a couple of hours before the end of the chart sales week, but last year’s “GRRR!” compilation (Polydor/Universal) nevertheless climbed 88-49.
On the compilation chart, “Clubland 23” (All Around The World/Universal Music TV), the latest TV-advertised collection in the 11-year-old dance series, debuted at No. 1. The 42-track album features recent club and pop hits by the likes of Fuse ODG, Armin Van Buuren, Avicii, PSY and Naughty Boy featuring Sam Smith.
Icona Pop’s “I Love It” sold almost 125,000 downloads last week to hit the singles summit, marking the 11th straight week that the No. 1 single has sold in excess of 100,000. The Official Charts Company reports that to be the longest sequence since January-April 1998.
Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” (Interscope/Universal), featuring TI and Pharrell Williams, may thus have had its four-week singles reign ended, but “Lines” still shifted yet another six-figure sum, 110,000 new sales taking its running tally to 829,000. That’s second only for the year to Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” (Columbia/Sony), featuring Pharrell Williams, which sold its millionth copy last Thursday, its 69th day on release.
Will.i.am’s “Bang Bang” (Interscope/Universal) debuted at No. 3 and boy band The Wanted’s “Walks Like Rihanna” (Global Talent/Universal) at No. 4. Next to arrive was “Lost & Not Found” (Mercury/Universal) by Chase & Status featuring self-styled vocalist Louis M^ttrs, at No. 15.
