Best Songs of 2012: Watch Katy Perry, One Direction & More Pick Favorites
The end of 2012 is fast approaching, and stars from different genres -- pop, hip-hop, country and more -- spoke to Billboard, revealing their favorite songs of the year. Fun.'s "Some Nights" was the clear frontrunner, with Andy Grammer, Owl City's Adam Young and The White Tie Affair's Chris Wallace all selecting it as their No. 1 of 2012. Even Carly Rae Jepsen jumped on the Fun. train, choosing the band's other hit, "We Are Young," as her favorite track.
Country stars Florida Georgia Line shouted out Lee Brice's "I Drive Your Truck" and Little Big Town's "Pontoon" -- "It kind of came out of nowhere and I'd never heard anything like it," says Brian Kelley. Meanwhile, the duo's own track, "Cruise," made Luke Bryan's best of 2012 list.
Another top song was K-pop star PSY's viral hit "Gangnam Style," which Afrojack, Neon Trees, and U.K. boy band the Wanted all named as one of 2012's top tracks. "I genuinely thought 'Gangnam' was awesome," says Jay McGuiness of the Wanted. "I was just really impressed that a Korean language song travelled the globe and no one cared. They're like, 'alright well it's catchy!'"
Also topping stars' lists thanks to its "catchy" factor was Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe," which Harry Styles of One Direction touts as "an unbelievable song." Liam Payne of One Direction and Siva Kaneswaran of the Wanted agree, and even Kelly Rowland was singing along this year -- "I do find myself singing that Carly Rae song, 'Call Me Maybe,'" she tells Billboard.
Katy Perry's 2012 favorites were notably diverse, with the pop star naming M83's "Midnight City" and Taylor Swift's "Begin Again" as her top tracks -- "I love Taylor Swift's new song 'Begin Again,'" she muses. "It just hit me." Meanwhile, Jordin Sparks and Neon Trees thought Perry crafted the best tune of the year, as both named "Wide Awake" as one of their favorites.
Watch above to see who else's songs were appreciated most by their peers, from Karmin's Calvin Harris shout-out to the Game's affinity for Kanye West, Big Sean and Jay-Z's "Clique."
