The duet for the ceremony on Friday (Aug. 8) at the National Stadium was announced at a press conference today. The hour-long artistic performance element of the ceremony will take place at 8 p.m. local time and will climax with the duet.
The song has not been performed at the three rehearsals in order to keep it secret until now. However, the title has still not been announced.
The opening and closing ceremonies department of the local organizing
committee (BOCOG) spent five years searching for the right song, according to director Zhang Heping.
"The passion will be lighted on the night of August 8, offering the hundreds of thousands of spectators in the National Stadium, as well as hundreds of millions of people outside, a spectacular performance," he says, according to an official transcript.
Brightman previously dueted with Jose Carreras for the 1992 Olympic theme, "Amigos Para Siempre", at the Barcelona Games.
Brightman is signed to EMI, but a release for the 2008 Olympic Theme has not been confirmed. Her current album "Symphony" (Manhattan Records/EMI) became her highest-charting record in the U.S. when it debuted at No. 13 on The Billboard 200 in February.
