Janelle Monáe, Anderson .Paak & Zane Lowe Discuss How Diversity Drives Innovation in Music: Watch

Backstage at Billboard’s Women In Music event, Janelle Monáe, Zane Lowe, and Anderson .Paak took some time to discuss how diversity can help drive innovation in the music industry.

Speaking with Billboard, Monáe notes, “When you have people in a room who may be from different worlds, different societies, different genders, that’s when you get the opportunity to meet someone different than yourself, then you’re trading ideas. Then the sparks are flying.”

Zane Lowe emphasizes the importance of listening to and learning about different people. “Any opportunity where we can broaden our own thinking and start to absorb more from each other, listen to each other, share more ideas, collaborate more,” he says. “It’s just gonna create a more fertile ground to experiment.”

Lowe adds that currently, he is watching that conversation growing, and that he is seeing diversity moving in the right direction. “I’m just seeing more exciting music, more styles of music,” he continues. “It just feels right. It feels exciting.”

Anderson .Paak also weighs in on the conversation, stating that the music industry is “thirsty” for more unique people who are not doing the same thing as everyone else is.

“There’s a lot of people doing the same thing,” he says, “So any time someone is daring and goes out and steps on a limb and does something a little to the left, it lets people know that you could be yourself. It’s going to drive everything. That’s what it’s all about, changing the game.”
