Grace VanderWaal Talks Being Inspired by Ariana Grande, 'Stargirl,' New Music at WIM 2018: Watch

Grace VanderWaal caught up with Billboard’s Chelsea Briggs and Tetris Kelly on the pink carpet at the 13th annual Women in Music event, chatting about her love of Ariana Grande, her new movie Stargirl and what fans can expect from her next album.

Speaking of Billboard’s woman of the year Ariana Grande, VanderWaal says, “She’s really inspirational, especially this year. She’s been through so much and came out with new work and new music and came out stronger. I just think that’s so amazing.”

Asked about her experience filming the Disney movie Stargirl, VanderWaal reveals that she was so scared and nervous about it at first, but that it genuinely changed her life. “I actually came out a different person and I miss everyone from the cast so much,” she says.

“I probably made the closest friends I’ve ever made in my entire life,” VanderWaal continues. “I’ve only ever really been close to my brother and sister, and so I’ve never really had friends before. That sounds so sad! But the cast were genuinely like a family now and I can’t wait for a sequel, honestly. I just wanna see them all again.”

Asked if there are plans for a sequel, the singer replies, “I don’t know anything, but there’s a second book, so watch the movie, and then there might be a sequel!”

In the interview, VanderWaal also gives fans a teaser of what they can expect from her next album, which she says will be released in early 2019. “My music is genuinely the same [as before], except you hear what I’ve been through and you hear me growing up a little bit,” she says. “I can’t wait for you to hear it, though. It’s so soon.”
