Atlanta-based duo St. Beauty received the American Express impact award at Billboard's 13th annual Women in Music event on Thursday (Dec. 6) in New York City.

After an introduction from trailblazer award recipient Janelle Monáe, the duo (Alexe Belle and Isis Valentino) took to the stage. “We were nervous before coming up here -- this is our very first award, and we’re so honored and grateful,” Belle began. “We want to thank God for putting the spirit of music within us, and to spark change in the world.”

Belle went on to thank Monáe, too, explaining that she had been listening to her from the age of sixteen. “I met her in a Target parking lot, and four years later, she becomes my mentor,” Belle said.

Valentino then took her turn at the mic. “We [Alexe and I] used to be coworkers at a music store and became a band there, and performed in the basement,” she explained. “The fact that Janelle showed up and saw something special in us, it means the world to us, and it’s a honor to have her as our mentor. We honor mentorship -- it’s so important in our lives.”

St. Beauty was chosen by Monáe to receive the award; both artists toured together this year, and belong to the Wondaland Art Society collective.

"We are thrilled to have trailblazer Janelle Monáe select this year's American Express impact award winner, St. Beauty," Deb Curtis, vice president of experiential marketing and partnerships at American Express, previously said in a statement. "We recognize the importance of backing women in music who are making an impact not only on the industry itself, but also for other women."
