Cyndi Lauper Reacts to Childhood Photos & Early Freddie Mercury-Inspired Fashion: Watch

Billboard's 13th annual Women in Music event, which takes place on Dec. 6 in New York City, will be honoring some of the most extraordinary women in music, including Cyndi Lauper, who is set to receive this year’s icon award. Ahead of the event, Billboard sat down with the singer to take a look back at photographs from her childhood and her early musical career, including pictures from her time in Flyer and Blue Angel.

The first image shown features a young Cyndi with her siblings at her little brother’s first communion. “He was seven, I was 12, my sister was going on 14,” she explains. “I don't think she liked getting dolled up like that.”

Another photograph displayed captures the singer in her mother’s apartment in the '70s, alongside her grandmother and her dog Sparkle.

In the video, Lauper also looks back at some pictures of some of her early bands, including Blue Angel and Flyer. Speaking of the Blue Angel picture, Lauper explains, “We would research all of the old photographs and figure out how to make them modern, and look like a fun band.”

When shown a photograph taken during one of her performances with Flyer, Lauper says, “As you could see, I was a little influenced by Freddie Mercury. I guess I had a Suzi Quatro hairdo, but then a lot of people did at that time. It was kind of Suzi Quatro, kind of David Bowie…we were just starting at that point, trying to figure out a look.”

You can watch the full video above to take a trip down memory lane with Cyndi Lauper, and make sure to tune in to the Women in Music red carpet pre-show live on Twitter from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. EST on Dec. 6.
