Alessia Cara delivered a fittingly austere performance of her smash single, "Scars to Your Beautiful," on Aug. 27 at the 2017 VMAs.
Initially appearing in a scarlet dress and black bowl cut wig, Cara was quickly undressed by black-clad dancers to reveal a more modest black tank and pants in keeping with the song's message of beyond-skin-deep acceptance. The crowd cheered and sang along as the 21-year-old belted out the hit's empowering chorus alone onstage.
"Scars to Your Beautiful" was nominated for three VMAs, including Video of the Year, Best Fight Against the System and Best Direction. Cara also won a VMA earlier in the night for her hit collaboration with Zedd, "Stay," in the Best Dance category.
