Common Leads Moment of Silence for Ferguson at VMAs
Common has been one of the most outspoken, reliably honest voices in music since the '90s, so it was fitting that the Chicago rapper took the stage at the 2014 VMAs to address the tragedy and ongoing tensions in Ferguson, Mo.
"Hip-hop has always been about truth and has been a powerful instrument of social change," Common said before asking the crowd to observe a moment of silence for Michael Brown and Ferguson.
It was a sobering reminder that while the entertainment industry celebrates, part of America is being torn apart by tension and prejudice. Throughout the evening, MTV also aired public service announcements pertaining to Ferguson.
So seriously, kudos to MTV for addressing that there's real drama in the world extending past "who wore it best" on the red carpet.
