For the 89th Academy Awards ceremony (Feb. 26), John Legend went theatrical with a medley performance of La La Land’s Oscar-nominated hits. The singer-songwriter, who is also a character and producer of the film, sang his renditions of “City of Stars” and “Audition (The Fools Who Dream)” with the company of a star-studded backdrop and dancers from the film’s signature opening number.

Following his red carpet look – a classic, black tie Gucci tuxedo – Legend pulled a costume change for the lively performance. “We went with a blue, three-piece blue suit from Burberry with a graphic print tie, which reminded me of the hand painted ties in the film,” Legend’s stylist David Thomas told Billboard about his second Oscars look.

The Burberry outfit, which had a more festive flair than his red carpet cumberbund, was finished with a pair of 1930’s-styled correspondent shoes by British brand Harring for a vintage feel.

“We decided to do something in the spirit of Ryan Gosling’s character [Sebastian Wilder] instead of John's [Keith],” Thomas said. “Although it's a contemporary film, that character is a little bit of a throwback in how he dresses.”
