Ice Cube on Oscars: 'You Can't Boycott Something That You Never Went To Anyway'
The summer hit was only nominated for best original screenplay, even though many people think it should have been nominated for best picture.
Appearing on the U.K.'s Graham Norton Show with Ride Along 2 co-star Kevin Hart, Cube said even if he doesn't go to this year's Oscars, that doesn't mean he's "boycotting" the show.
"I never used to go anyway," he said. "You can't boycott something that you never went to anyway."
But he indicated it would be appropriate for him to stay away since he wasn't nominated.
"I look at it like a horse race. Once your horse loses the race, you tear up your ticket and back on out," he said of the Oscar nominations.
He went on to explain that he doesn't really feel like he has anything to complain about with respect to how Compton has been received.
"We don't do movies for the industry. We do movies for the fans, for the people. And the industry, you know, if they give you a trophy or not or pat you on the back or not, it's nice but its not something that you should dwell on," he said. "We got accolades from all levels, from our core fans to our curious fans, from people who didn't even think they wanted to see that movie. I think an older generation got an understanding on why we did that kind of music and the younger generation got a history lesson, and we got so much praise for the movie."
He added, "How could you be mad because one other academy or guild or whatever didn't say [we're] No. 1 … It's crying about not having enough icing on your cake."
