Maluma Reveals His Picks for the Top 5 Latin Urban Artists of All Time

Eric Ryan Anderson
Maluma for Billboard's Greatest of All Time

Maluma has many reasons to celebrate. This week, he’s the king of the Latin charts, having earned his first No. 1 as a lead act on Top Latin Albums for his U.S. debut album, Pretty Boy Dirty Boy. In doing so, he also became the first Colombian urban act to top the chart. At the same time, the album’s first single, “Borró Cassette,” is No. 1 on Latin Airplay.

Not bad for a 21-year-old. But just because he’s young doesn’t mean he’s naïve. Maluma has been a student of the game and its masters for some time, and it shows. Here, the selfie king, who touts more than 6 million followers on Instagram, reveals the five Latin urban artists he admires the most (in no particular order).

1. Daddy Yankee
"Last year I had the opportunity to spend time with Daddy Yankee while we were filming La Voz Kids. He's been a great teacher. He was like, 'Look, you’re young, you have your future in your hands and now you have to decide what to do with it.' He knows how much I love him and how much I appreciate his support. Since the first day we met, he was like, 'You’re doing great, but please focus, keep your feet on the ground, and work. Don't be selfish or ungrateful.' That’s the key.

2. Pitbull
"I have not had the chance to meet him and speak with him directly but I know that when that day comes, I think it’s going to be incredible because I think that Pitbull is one guy who changed the game."

3. Don Omar
"He’s the king of reggaeton. He’s so versatile. I haven’t had the opportunity to meet him yet but I know that day is coming and he’s going to be a part of my future and my music."

4. Wisin
"
When I was with him at the Carlos Vives & friends concert in Bogota, he was like, ‘Yo Maluma, I see a bright future for you. I want to do music with you.’ And I was like, ‘Really, me?’ And he’s like, ‘Of course, I want to do great things. Let me help you.’ So I am so thankful."

5. Yandel
"Same thing with Yandel, he’s such a great example for the younger generation and I hope to collaborate with him one day."
