Dua Lipa Calls 'Electricity' Video a 'Massive Turning Point' at 2018 AMAs: Watch
Dua Lipa spoke with Billboard’s Chelsea Briggs on the red carpet at the 2018 American Music Awards on Tuesday (Oct. 9), chatting about how her latest music video boosted her confidence, her new album and her current relationship.
Speaking of the video for her Silk City collaboration “Electricity,” Lipa tells Billboard that filming those visuals were a “massive turning point” for her because it was the first time that she wasn’t afraid of what people might think about her.
“I just wanted to dance and perform and just enjoy myself,” she explains, “And that’s what I did, and I’m so proud of it because I feel like it really helped with my confidence a lot.”
The singer is also asked about what fans can expect from her forthcoming album, and if her current relationship has inspired it at all.
“It’s a mixture of things, really,” she says of the record’s subject matter. “I want to make music, obviously, about the way that I’m feeling, 100 percent, but also just unconventional things, things that maybe people won’t necessarily think they would hear in a pop song, or necessarily wouldn’t think that they would hear an artist talk about.”
“But I’m working on it, so I haven’t quite figured it out yet,” she adds, “But of course, love is amazing and I’m such a believer in love, and I feel so lucky to be loved.”
The “New Rules” singer is then posed with the question of whether or not she has any rules for her relationship, to which she says she does not. “I think you have to both allow each other to be themselves,” Lipa says.
“You shouldn’t have to try and monopolize someone’s time – allow them to have their time of their own,” Lipa continues. “Don’t be so jealous unless there’s a reason to. I think it’s just important to go with the flow. If it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be, and that’s it.”
