Ella Mai Talks Success of 'Boo'd Up' & Wanting to Collaborate With Kehlani: Watch

Last week, Ella Mai helped announce the nominees for the 2018 American Music Awards, alongside Bebe Rexha, Normani, Kane Brown, and Billboard’s Chelsea Briggs. Ahead of the announcement event, she caught up with Billboard News host Tetris Kelly to chat about the success of her song “Boo’d Up,” her friendship with Kehlani and more.

Mai, who is nominated for two AMA awards -- favorite female artist - soul/R&B and favorite song - soul/R&B -- discusses the moment when she realized her song "Boo'd Up" was a hit, telling Billboard, "As soon as the summer hit and everyone started doing covers, and there were so many videos of men singing it, that's when I was like, 'OK, I think this is something. Definitely.'"

In the interview, Mai chats about her friendship with Kehlani as well, noting that they will very likely collaborate in the future. “She took me out on tour last year, and we’re really, really good friends,” Mai says.

“We haven’t got the time to be in the studio yet,” she continues. “I think just because our schedules have been so different, she was on tour when I wasn’t, and then when she came off I was on tour, so we haven’t got around to it yet but I’m sure it will come in the future.”
