Best American Music Awards Performances No. 17: Alicia Keys & Usher Deliver Swoon-Worthy Performance of 'My Boo' at the 2004 AMAs
In honor of the 2017 American Music Awards, Billboard is counting down the best performances from the awards show’s history. Here is No. 17.
In 2004, you couldn't get much bigger than Alicia Keys and Usher thanks to their smash collaboration "My Boo," which the pair performed together at 2004 American Music Awards. The song peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 -- reaching its peak on Oct. 30, 2004, just two weeks before their Nov. 14 AMAs performance -- and remained on the chart in some capacity for 26 weeks.
Introduced by Janet Jackson, the performance begins with Keys alone at the piano where she puts her own gravelly twist on the first half of the intro by herself. Usher comes strolling out of a gate onto the stage in an all-white suit and hat, giving off major Michael Jackson vibes.
The stage is set to be in something of an underground speakeasy with Keys and Usher alternating on vocals and playing coy in their choreography. Until the end, when they couldn't bear it any longer, getting as close as possible to kissing -- but leaving fans wanting another performance for that romantic moment to actually happen.
