Hot 97 Suspends DJ Cipha Sounds After 'Haitian/HIV' Joke
New York radio station Hot 97 has indefinitely suspended morning DJ/host Cipha Sounds following a distasteful joke made on the air that has the Haitian community in uproar.
"The reason I'm HIV negative is 'cause I don't mess with Haitian girls," Cipha Sounds, born Luis Diaz, said earlier this week, highly upsetting the station's Haitian listenership. Yesterday (Dec. 21), he took the time to apologize to his listeners on-air, stating, "I made a stupid, tasteless joke that was a one-liner that was taken totally the wrong way and I want to say sincerely that I apologize."
But apparently, the apology didn't satisfy the Haitian community, a few members which protested outside the Hot 97 building yesterday in hopes of having the 15-year radio show veteran terminated.

The station hopes to rectify the situation, not by firing Cipha Sounds, but by engaging in a three-part plan that includes the indefinite suspension of Ciph, but also sensitivity training focused on the Haitian community and working with local community leaders to help increase the awareness of HIV and the HIV epidemic.
