Sandra St. Victor Talks Daughters of Soul PledgeMusic Campaign: 'This Is Divine Intervention'
Offspring of Donny Hathaway, Bill Withers, Chaka Khan & others will be the focus of documentary, soundtrack & tour.
“This is divine intervention, the universe saying here you go.” So declares singer/songwriter Sandra St. Victor about her latest venture, a PledgeMusic campaign to fulfill her long-dreamed Daughters of Soul documentary, soundtrack and worldwide tour.
The three-tiered project will feature the daughters of six soul legends: Lalah Hathaway (Donny Hathaway), Lisa Simone (Nina Simone), Indira Khan (Chaka Khan), Kori Withers (Bill Withers), Syleena Johnson (Syl Johnson) and Sylvette “Phunne” Stone (The Family Stone’s Sly Stone and Cynthia Robinson). The entire package is inspired by the Daughters of Soul European concert series that St. Victor founded in 2004 to carry on R&B’s influential legacy. The last tour in 2007 featured St. Victor, Hathaway, Withers, Khan and Nona Hendryx. Previous lineups have included Joyce Kennedy (Mother’s Finest), Deniece Williams, Caron Wheeler (Soul II Soul) and Leah McCrae (daughter of George and Gwen McCrae).
“The stories, tears and laughter that were shared as we sat in hotel rooms, rehearsal halls and airport lounges … I still get chills thinking about the similarities of our various experiences and emotions,” recalls St. Victor, former lead singer of The Family Stand. “I knew all this needed to be documented and I tried then. But things fell through the cracks.”
Now Zeppers Film + TV, an award-winning film company based in Amsterdam, is onboard to produce the documentary with help from the Dutch Film Commission. Filming is slated to start in April 2016. In the meantime, funds are still needed to record/produce the soundtrack and organize the tour. “So I thought, ‘Hey let’s take it to the people,’” says St. Victor.
All pre-orders come with an AccessPass, the gateway to exclusive behind-the-scenes content. Fans can purchase signed CDs, documentary DVDs, custom T-shirts (one is emblazoned with “6 Bad Bitches”) and handwritten lyric sheets. A host of exclusive items is also available. Among them: A Daughters of Soul VIP concert experience in Los Angeles or London and a documentary screening party in L.A. or Amsterdam.
“Daughters of Soul is about how this music influences culture and action,” says St. Victor. “How the lyrics of Donny, Sly, Bill, Nina and the others are even more relevant today than 10 years ago. This project brings that to the forefront through these talents’ parents and through their own music. These women have a lot to say.”
