Kelis Goes the 'Distance' with Skream-Produced Single: Listen

POTW: Britney Spears, Jay-Z and Beyoncé, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift

She may not be singing "Acappella," but an always-eccentric Kelis gives it her all on stage at Christopher Street West's 40th Anniversary LA PRIDE on Jun. 12 in West Hollywood, CA.

Kelis' single "Distance" premiered on London's Reprezent Radio on June 30, leaking online on Sunday. The track's the first look at her upcoming sixth studio album. Featuring a clear EDM influence, the single was written and produced alongside popular dubstep producer Skream.

"I was working with a friend of mine and she said 'Skream's got this great track for you, can I get him to send it?' So I said yes and then he sent that track and something else. I've been on a real 1990s vibe with this record, it's kind of trip-hoppish. So I wrote a track to that," Kelis told NME concerning her work with the British producer.

Kelis has been recognized for dabbling in the electronic scene before, working with producers and artists such as Calvin Harris and David Guetta -- the Kelis-featuring "Bounce" by Calvin Harris is currently No. 22 on the Dance/Club Play Songs chart.

Dubstep has been taking strides into the broader hip-hop scene in recent months. Snoop Dogg collaborated with Chase and Status by adding vocals to their track "Eastern Jam," and Jay-Z and Kanye West's "Watch The Throne" track "Who Gon Stop Me" was produced by bass-heavy British artist Flux Pavilion. Skrillex and Wale also recently collaborated on a new track called "Let's Get Down."

Kelis has yet to announce a release date for the upcoming album, her follow-up to 2010's "Flesh Tone." However, she tells NME that she is "midway" through the process and that the new album will be "more electro and darker."
