Janelle Monáe performs at Rebecca Minkoff's New York Fashion Week show, September 2013.

At NYFW, Monáe performed, shared excitement for her "transcendent" new album, & praised Minkoff's "attention to detail."

Soulful R&B singer Janelle Monáe, took center stage at Lincoln Center performing new songs at Rebecca Minkoff's runway show as part of New York Fashion Week Friday (September 6).

"This has been my favorite part of fashion week so far," said Monáe, sporting her familiar pompadour and black and white riding gear. "I love Rebecca’s line. And I just found out she's a Sagittarius like me. So I love her even more now"

"Hey, you guys put me on the cover! I love the way it turned out. Beautiful,” the singer revealed to Billboard after the show, speaking of the June 15, 2013 Billboard magazine cover she graced (buy a copy of that issue at Shop.Billboard.com).

Monáe’s killer performance was part of "American Express Unstaged," a program that pairs artists from different genres with renowned directors to collaborate and share their work through digital media.

"I‘m a fan of Rebecca’s work, she pays such close attention to detail, and I actually almost forgot my lyrics during the performance because I saw these amazing pair of shoes,” Monáe said.

Minkoff's collection featured flirty dresses, bold prints and pops of color inspired by Latin American women. “We looked at Bianca Jagger’s life prior to her Studio 54 days, and we were drawn to her Latin American upbringing,” Minkoff told Billboard. “Other influential Latin American women across all decades started coming to mind with Frida Kahlo at one end of the spectrum and contemporaries such as Alice Dellal at the other.”

"Art, fashion and music, are all one,” Janelle mused about the show. With this in mind, we asked her who in the music industry perfectly blends these creative genres. “Solange Knowles is beautiful. Erykah Badu had has a really strong and empowering sense of style. And Prince, of course. With my style I try to be consistent and classic. I feel as though I’m a time traveler, so I like to dress appropriate at all times. I think labels are boring.”

Janelle Monáe’s performance comes at a cool time for the “Q.U.E.E.N” songstress who is about to drop new album "The Electric Lady" on September 10,  “I’m excited for the release of my album, it’s transcendent, revolutionary and rooted in R&B.”
