VMAs 2011: The 20 Best & Worst Dressed
An evening of gender bending, babies and all things leopard commenced last night at the 28th annual celebration of the MTV Video Music Awards. The show was loud in more ways then one, and certainly held true to its long tradition of exhibiting the most outrageous fashions of the year. From awe-inspiring sequins to tragic mirrored creations, the costumes of the evening encompassed a glitter-covered spectrum. From
WORST: Nicki Minaj
The eclectic rapper brought the ferocity of hurricane Irene to L.A. last night in a chaotic Gareth Pugh mirrored assemble. The hectic look -- complete with a cartoon-patterned face mask -- did have a hint of sweetness to it with an ice cream pendent necklace and cotton candy inspired hair 'do. Creating a unique hurricane couture look,
BEST: Selena Gomez
The Disney darling seemed to have stepped out of an episode of the Addams family in a dazzling creation by Julien Macdonald. The singer's dark, even gothic look was somewhat inviting with a plunging backline and dazzling Brian Atwood metallic pumps. Welcome to the dark side,
WORST: Adele (Carpet Look)
BEST: Katy Perry (Presenting & Carpet Looks)
On the black carpet, Katy Perry transformed into a Polynesian princess in a decadent Atelier Versace mini dress embroidered with cherry blossom-shaped sequins, twirling an equally as fabulous parasol. Bubblegum Pink Jimmy Choos added a delicate and sweet twist to the singer's Asian-inspired look.
Katy Perry revealed a more demure and sophisticated side to her style as she emerged in a majestic Tom Ford violet gown that sparkled with a regal elegance. The rich purple hues accentuated the singer's pink hair for a brilliant burst of cool color.
The "Gucci Gucci" singer was clad in a Mickey Mouse inspired -sequined mini dress that not only challenged the technicolor feature of our TV screens, but also highlighted her out-there style. Her cartoon look and love of all things Mickey showed up on the singers outfit and even her nails, that were decorated with the infamous mouse logo. The creative and wild look could have been enhanced with a great pair of black Mugler heels!
BEST: Beyonce (Performance & Carpet Looks)
WORST: Miley Cyrus
Although it was somewhat refreshing to have the singer covered in all the appropriate places, her long-sleeved Roberto Cavalli dress aged her well beyond her years. We may go as far to say perhaps a bit too covered.
BEST: Kanye West (Performance Look)
WORST: Rebecca Black
Arrived to the MTV Video Music Awards looking more like she was ready for a job interview then an awards show. Clad in a Theory jacket and modest lace top, the singer unsuccessfully tried to pump up the volume with a pair of Louboutin heels.
BEST: Britney Spears
The winner for Best Pop Video and the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award kept her look simple and fierce in a black zig-zagged Moschino dress and S&M patent leather boots by Gina.
WORST: Katy Perry (Acceptance Look)
Katy Perry may be one of best-dressed picks of the night, but she donned so many different outfits that at least one of them was bound to hit the mark. As she accepted her award for best music video, Perry seemed to have danced out of a cartoon. Clad in a Christian Dior Couture ensemble complete with a yellow box cap (cheese cube, ahem), the singer certainly turned up the volume, creating a daydream-induced look that left many questioning was Perry living in a world of reality or fantasy.
BEST: Justin Bieber
WORST: Skylar Grey
The "Invisible" singer was having many wish she was just that when she arrived in a cropped sleeveless mustard turtleneck, combat boots and theatrically-applied eyeliner. Grey did distract everyone's attention from her melodramatic garb when she announced her recent collaboration with Marilyn Manson on her forthcoming album.
BEST: Kelly Rowland
WORST: Wiz Khalifa
BEST: Jessie J
Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi could not choose one color or pattern for the VMAs, so she went with a little bit of everything. The "Jersey Shore" star arrived in a brown, orange, red, and black strapless cocktail dress with flame-shaped overlays. Hopefully the flames ignited after the show, burning this garment from innocent eyes.
BEST: Tony Bennett
WORST: Katie Holmes
Katie Holmes mesmerized all in a stunning creation by Azzedine Alaia. The figure flattering mini-dress showed off the actress's gorgeous stems that unfortunately ended with a Proenza Schouler work boot that proved more appropriate for a construction site than an awards show.
