Since Michael Jackson thrilling back in the '80s, the act of face covering has been on the scene. Recently fashion designers like Rick Owens, Walter Van Beirendonck, Alexander Wang and Maison Martin Margiela have been using facemasks to accentuate their creations, causing this fad to spread. From the runway to the streets, anonymity has become quite the trend in the modern music industry. Artists seem to enjoy flirting with the idea of a hidden face. Last December, West was spotted performing in Atlantic City rocking a glittering Margiela crystal-encrusted facemask and recently was seen at Paris Fashion Week in a red ski mask attending the Maison Martin Margiela haute couture fashion show. Bieber went a bit more industrial with the face-shielding trend, opting for a black gasmask as he got his shop on at ACNE in London last week. A$AP Rocky is a big fan of this trend, rocking the mask both onstage and off.

Celebrating this fad, we caught up with the “Goldie” rapper and got his take on the facemask. Also, check out our slideshow spotlighting hot masked moments in fashion and music. Anonymity is the new celebrity.

What do you love about the facemask?

Well, what I love about facemasks is you get to hide your identity to an extent. I went my whole “Long Live A$AP” tour wearing facemasks. It was the climax of my performance. A facemask gives you another identity.

Why did you choose to wear a mask to the y-3 show during fashion week?

I choose to wear a facemask at the Y-3 show because it was cold, and number two, I didn’t want people coming up to me every five minutes. I wanted to enjoy the show. So I hid my identity. But they still knew who I was anyway.

Who do you think rocks the mask the best?

Who else? [Pointing to himself and laughing]
