Shovels & Rope, the Charleston, S.C., duo of Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst, received four nominations from the Americana Music Association at a Grammy Museum ceremony Tuesday that included performances from Buddy Miller and Jim Lauderdale, T Bone Burnett with Lisa Marie Presley, Elizabeth Cook and the Milk Carton Kids.
Miller and Emmylou Harris received three nominations each from the association, which will hold its 2013 Honors & Awards Sept. 18 at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.
Shovels & Rope are up for awards in the categories of album, emerging artist, duo or group and song ("Birmingham"). Miller is up for artist of the year plus album and duo or group for his collaboration with Jim Lauderdale, "Buddy & Jim"; the duo and their band performed a tribute to the late George Jones at the nominations event.
Harris is contending for artist, album and duo or group awards for her album with Rodney Crowell, "Old Yellow Moon." Richard Thompson, JD McPherson and John Fullbright received two nominations each.
AXS TV will broadcast the nominations live and will also broadcast the Sept. 18 ceremony. Lauderdale returns as host and Miller will lead the event’s all-star band.
The awards show kicks off the Americana Music Festival, which runs through Sept. 22 at various locations in Nashville.
