Red Hot Chili Peppers - Breaking News out of the KHOT News Room!

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are back. Well, they're going to be back at some point next year. The long-running funky rock quartet revealed on Friday (Sept. 24) that they have teamed with promoter Live Nation for a 2022 global stadium tour, with dates, sales information and support acts to be announced soon.

In the meantime, they teased their first world outing since the end of the 2016-2017 Getaway Tour via a nearly three-minute fake news promo video from imaginary news station KHOT. In the clip, singer Anthony Kiedis -- aka Johnson Hammerswaddle -- anchors the fictional station alongside bassist Flea (Todd the Squirrel) as they rock cheap wigs and mustaches while discussing such breaking news as the tanking price of beer nuts and new chicken sandwiches.

Drummer Chad Smith makes the scene as serene weatherman Randy Raindrops, while guitarist John Frusciante appears as himself for a little chat segment that drops a few crumbs of news about the outing. "John, might we expect you and the fellas to play live anytime soon?" the Squirrel asks.

"Yeah, we're gonna do a tour starting in June 2002," Frusciante replies, sending the previously sedate news professionals into wacky freakout mode. He also revealed that the U.S. leg of the tour will kick off in July 2022.

After relieving guitarist Josh Klinghoffer of his duties in 2019 after a decade of service, the upcoming tour will feature the trio once again jamming with three-time member Frusciante, who first joined in 1988. He split from the group in 1992, rejoined in 1998, left again in 2009, and then re-re-upped in 2019.

The band released their Danger Mouse-produced 11th studio album, The Getaway, in 2016. It was unclear at press time if their 12th album would drop before the tour, though Smith hinted in an interview in January 2020 that the band was working on a new collection of songs.
