Shinedown has unveiled an animated video for "Monsters," premiering exclusively via Billboard today (July 2).

The video was animated by Toon53 Productions, and explores the idea of facing your inner demons. "My monsters are real and they're trained how to kill/ And there's no coming back, and they just laughed at how I feel," vocalist Brent Smith asserts on the explosive song.

In the video, we see a monster with bright orange hair in a business suit do a shot of some green liquid courage before being faced with another, more evil monster. He continues to struggle until he finally has a wake up call and returns to his human form. Suddenly, he has a newfound sense of urgency, and runs away to discover some mysterious signs shaped like exclamation points.

"The masks represent the parts of your psyche that make you afraid of who you are," Smith explains to Billboard of the video for the track, which is from the band's 2018 album Attention, Attention (Atlantic Records). "Inside of that, from an album standpoint, Attention, Attention is all about not being afraid to fail and not being afraid period because you’re not going to be defined by your failures, you will be defined by the fact that you refuse to give up. Your monsters may be real, but that doesn’t mean you have to give into them."

Smith says the visual was inspired by the artist Marissa Alvarez. "She’s an artist that has this otherworldly mindset when it comes to drawing and character descriptions and development," Smith says. "We thought the song would open up the world of animation to get familiar with Shinedown and [vice versa]." Smith adds that it's "a very interesting, static type of video, where the shots are actually longer in between the frames, which allows your mindset to anticipate what’s going on. You have to think, and you want to watch it over and over. Each time you watch it, you see something brand new."

"Monsters" recently hit No. 1 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Songs Chart, landing the band its 14th leader. "It’s significant and it means a great deal to us because of the audience," Smith tells Billboard of hitting No. 1. "They are the ones who allowed us to have this platform and ultimately have always allowed us to be ourselves. The achievements are very appreciated and we will always be humble in regards to everyone that supports the band around the world. That being said, we are not a band that has ever believed in a ceiling. In our mind, music and especially songs are the building blocks to enhance humanity. Miles Davis once said, 'If you’re gonna tell a story, tell it with some attitude.'"
