Sleater-Kinney Return With St. Vincent-Produced 'Hurry On Home,' Announce Tour Dates

Sleater-Kinney tipped fans off earlier this year that they were in the studio with St. Vincent working on something. Turns out that something was the blazing new song "Hurry On Home," which the group dropped on Wednesday (May 29) along with a playful lyric video. Sleater-Kinney also confirmed a fall North American tour.

The Miranda July-directed clip, which unfolds via a series of Instagram posts and text messages, opens with drummer Janet Weiss' bass-heavy beat and the urgent couplet, "Hurry on home to me/ I've set the place for two/ Hurry on back to me/ I've made my mood your mood."

Described in a press release as unapologetically tackling "vulnerabilities [and] touching upon being 'unlovable, unlistenable, unwatchable,'" the song finds guitarist/vocalist Carrie Brownstein adding "dress downable," "uptownable," "hair grabbable" and "grandslammable" to that list in a song that the singer explains was a chance to step outside the group's usual sound.

"I think for Carrie and [guitarist/vocalist] Corin [Tucker] it was liberating to explore a different sound palette,” says Weiss, with Brownstein adding, “Instead of just going into the studio to document what we’d done, we were going in to explore and to find the essence of something. To dig in deeper.” Tucker describes working on the new music as "like this manic energy of empowerment.”

The track -- which can be downloaded/streamed here -- adds a bit of new wave groove, a choir-like vocal segment and funky keyboards to the band's typically angular, sharp-edged punk. The group has mapped out an extensive North American tour for the fall that kicks off on Oct. 9 at the Fox Theater in Spokane, Washington.
