The 1960s music scene in Los Angeles was a vibrant one, and now a documentary titled Echo In the Canyon will explore the rise of icons such as the Beach Boys, the Byrds, Crosby, Stills and Nash, the Mamas and the Papas, and Buffalo Springfield.

A new trailer shows Jakob Dylan interviewing Tom Petty, Brian Wilson, Eric Clapton, and Ringo Starr, among others, as they discuss the Laurel Canyon music scene. “California was like this legendary paradise,” the late Petty says at the trailer’s start.

The film, due in theaters next month, includes candid conversations between Dylan and Michelle Phillips, Stephen Stills, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Roger McGuinn and Jackson Browne as well as contemporary musicians they influenced like Petty, Beck, Fiona Apple, Cat Power, Regina Spektor, and Norah Jones.

“The best test of songwriting is that it transcends its moment in time and there is no doubt that the songs we explore in this film are as powerful today as they were in 1965,” Dylan, the film’s executive producer, says in a statement.

Echo In the Canyon will open in Los Angeles on May 24 at at Arclight's Cinerama Dome and The Landmark followed by a New York opening on May 31 at the Angelika and The Landmark at 57 West.
