Sarah Tudzin sees the big picture.
In fronting Illuminati Hotties, the L.A.-based songwriter crafts clever garage rock that riffs on rampant young adult hangups: being low on cash, being out of clothes to wear, wasting time on hookups that don't deserve it. Lyrics quirky and clever, guitars and synths crunching and fizzing just so -- Illuminati Hotties' debut LP Kiss Yr Frenemies was one of last year's under-the-radar triumphs.
Tudzin's secret weapon is her wildly diverse studio background: over the past few years, her credits range from indie rock (engineer on Amen Dunes' Freedom, mixing assistant on Slowdive's self-titled LP) to mass appeal hip-hop (assistant engineer on Logic's Everybody, sound design on the Hamilton soundtrack) to superstar pop (assistant engineer on recent sessions with Lady Gaga and Barbra Streisand). We can't promise you'll hear all of those influences on her latest song, but you will hear about a lousy first date whose cute dog was the best part.
