Winter X Games Athletes Share Their Killer Spotify Pump-Up Playlists
Check out what Hailey Langland, Nick Goepper, Scotty James, Kyle Mack & Cassie Sharpe listen to when they're training.
If you're still huddled under a blanket after the weekend's arctic blast, then we've got the perfect heart-warming couch trip for you. The 2019 X Games Aspen (Jan. 24-27) are about to heat up at Buttermilk Mountain in Aspen, Colorado, and Billboard has killer playlists from some of the event's biggest athletes.
In addition to high-flying action at North America's premier winter action sports competition, there will be performances by Lil Wayne, Louis the Child, The Chainsmokers and Kygo at the snowdown that will be broadcast on ESPN and ABC.
Check out some of the tunes that will keep Hailey Langland, Nick Goepper, Scotty James, Kyle Mack and Cassie Sharpe on their edges.
The 18-year-old snowboarding ace won a gold medal at the Big Air event at the 2017 Winter X Games, where she became the first female snowboarder to land a double cork in X Games history after making her first appearance at 17 at the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, as part of the U.S. team. “I love this playlist so much, it’s my go to for any mood I’m in," Langland, who plays piano, guitar and ukulele, says about her list, which features everything from Rex Orange County and Clairo to Billie Eilish, Cigarettes After Sex and Froth. "I’m so excited to see Kygo at X. 'Stole the Show' is one of my favorite songs and I’m sure that will be the case when he performs.”
James, 24, became Australia's youngest male Olympian in 50 years (and youngest male competitor) when he took the slopes at the Vancouver Olympics in 2010, going on to win the bronze medal in men's halfpipe at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang. “This playlist and the artists get me pumped. There is a variety of different genres depending on the mood I’m in,” says James, a banjo player, about his list, which features everyone from Bon Iver and Alt-J to King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, 21 Savage, Drake and AC/DC." [I'm] looking forward to being back in Aspen and riding under the lights. It’s always an exciting atmosphere to be a part of," he add, saying he's very psyched to see Weezy perform.
The American freestyle skier won a bronze medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, and a silver at the 2018 winter games in PyeongChang. The Indiana native has also scooped up three golds and two silvers at the Winter X Games over the years. "I am always listening to music when I’m skiing. No matter what. My playlist consists of genres all across the board! EDM, metal, hip-hop and some classic rock," Goepper says of his list, which ranges from Steve Angello to Eminem, Avicii, Queen, Yellowcard and Ice Cube. "I’m most pumped for the courses at X Games! We get to ride the best course of the year with sled laps. With epic jumps and amazing rail features. It doesn’t get much better than that!" Like James, he's very psyched to see Wayne. "He has insane energy when he's onstage," he says. "I saw him perform a few years ago and it was epic."

Mack, 21, already had a Burton Snowboard sponsorship by age 7, and in 2011, he was invited join the U.S. Snowboarding Team, where he specializes in slopestyle and big air. He snagged a bronze medal in both disciplines at the FIS Freestyle Ski and Snowboarding World Championships in 2015 and in March 2016 he won the U.S. Open men's slopestyle final and a silver in the men's big air final at the 2018 PyeongChang games. "All of the songs on this playlist have a special meaning to me and are the ones I play to get juiced before riding!" he says of tracks from Mura Masa, Diplo, Juice WRLD, Odesza, Whethan and Jauz. He says he's most excited to see Louis the Child. "It’s been cool to see their set and production grow over the years."
Sharpe is the reigning Olympic champion in women's halfpipe after winning gold in PyeongChang in 2018. She also won a silver medal at the 2015 World Championships in halfpipe in Kreischberg, Austria, and she's won gold and bronze in superpipe at the Winter X Games in 2016 and 2018, respectively. “I’m currently obsessed with Jessie Reyez and her IDGAF attitude, hence three of her songs featured," she says of a playlist that also includes SonReal, K-Os, Daniel Caesar, Alessia Cara and The Weeknd. "Every song on this playlist fires me up. I enjoy a wide variety of tunes... there’s not one genre that I like more then the other... so this is a perfectly curated playlist of all Canadian artists that get me hyped up to ski the halfpipe." And of course she "cannot WAIT to shake it to Lil Wayne!”
