Mumford & Sons perform on Saturday Night Live on Dec. 8, 2018.

Since breaking out with Sigh No More and the roar of "Little Lion Man" in 2009, Mumford & Sons have gradually moved from their unplugged beginnings as a folk quartet to a harder-rocking place -- and their latest stint on Saturday Night Live was a perfect meld of their roots and their new direction.

On Saturday (Dec. 8), Mumford & Sons played two tracks off their latest effort and fourth full-length, Delta, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in November and became the best-selling alternative album of the year to date.

"Guiding Light," the album's first single, floated on the tight harmonies that have become the calling cards of Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, Winston Marshall and Ted Dwane. For "Delta," Mumford traded in his acoustic guitar for an electric one, which came in handy when the song's initial hush gave way to an arena-worthy crescendo.

This marked Mumford & Sons' third showing on SNL following appearances in 2012 and 2015.
