Hozier Premieres Passionate 'Movement' Video Starring Ballet Dancer Sergei Polunin: Watch

Edward Cooke

In support of his upcoming sophomore album, set to arrive early next year, Hozier dropped the new song "Movement" on Wednesday (Nov. 14), along with a moving video starring Ukrainian ballet dancer Sergei Polunin.

As the title suggest, the emotional song touches on the beauty of movement, as Hozier sings about watching the subject dancing freely, without reservation and Polunin spins across the screen in pirouettes inside a dingy, abandoned warehouse. "So move me, baby/Shake like the bough of a willow tree/You do it naturally, move me," the singer soulfully croons on the track's chorus, in adoration of his lover.

In line with the theme of movement, Polunin takes the lead role in the visual, dancing a classical ballet against his clones, who turn against him in the clip's enigmatic final frame of the video directed by UK duo Us (Chris Barrett and Luke Taylor). Polunin previously collaborated with famed photographer/video director David LaChapelle for a video set to "Take Me To Church" for Steven Cantor's "Dancer" documentary.

"I was first confronted by Sergei’s talent when I saw a performance of his set to my music in collaboration with David LaChapelle," Hozier said in a statement. "I believe one of the greatest things to come of your own work is for it to form part of another artist’s vision or execution. That performance itself gave rise to ideas in the song ‘Movement,’ so I was incredibly proud to work with Sergei on this video. Sergei Polunin is a once in a generation talent. He’s a man of incredible skill and artistry and shows a dedication to his art form that I find inspiring. I’m thrilled to share this with everyone."

Polunin added that he was overjoyed when he found out that Hozier wanted him to be in the video for the song. "I was over the moon with happiness," he said. "When I first heard the song, I thought – he did it again, he created a masterpiece. His music inspired and moved me before, and he did it again with ‘Movement.’”

After blowing up with his hit "Take Me To Church" in 2013, Hozier returned earlier this year with the Nina Cried Power EP.
