Mitski Drops Solemn New Single 'Two Slow Dancers': Listen

Bao Ngo
Mitksi

Mitski has dropped the third single from her upcoming album Be The Cowboy, a solemn ballad about two people growing out of a past love entitled “Two Slow Dancers.” An accompanying lyric video was also released, which layers the text over a spinning disco ball and a black background.

The track is a stark contrast from the disco-leaning lead radio single “Nobody,” channeling the sparsity and emotional intensity of earlier releases like Puberty 2 closer “A Burning Hill.” Incidentally, “Two Slow Dancers” is also an album closer. Both tracks are similar in the sense that they convey a rawness through negative space. On the minimalistic “Two Slow Dancers,” what Mitski doesn’t explicitly say is almost more powerful than what she does. The repetition of the line “we’re just two slow dancers/last ones out” as the chorus creates a harrowing effect, highlighting a fear of aging, a letting go of familiarity, with hardly any words at all.

Mitski has previously explained that Be The Cowboy, her fifth studio album, follows a character she describes as an “a very controlled icy repressed woman who is starting to unravel.”

Of the characters in the new single, she said, “They used to have something together that is no longer there and they’re trying to relive it in a dance, knowing that they’ll have to go home and go back to their lives.”

Be The Cowboy will be released via Dead Oceans on Aug.17. Mitski will soon embark on an extensive European and North American tour.
