Alt-Rock Trio Ume Return With Haunting New Album 'Other Nature': Exclusive Stream

Andy Schwartz

The Austin band's latest LP marks their first in four years.

If you're into psychedelic guitar and vocals that are equally as entrancing, alt-rock trio Ume may just be your band. And fortunately, the threesome is back in action -- and more mopecore than ever -- with a new album, Other Nature, coming July 20.

The LP, which is the group's first in four years, is the result of vocalist Lauren Larson's postnatal curiosity and itching to get back into the studio. Little did she know that it would become her most personal and transformative collection of songs, and pivotal for the health of both herself and her band.

"I was playing guitar constantly — writing what would become this album while my new baby slept," Larson explains to Billboard. "I was waking up — not making lullabies, but pulling my heart out of my chest through these songs — ultimately finding empowerment and recovery, letting go and letting love in. We always try to make music that is powerful and impassioned. This record strives to be that too. But for me, and hopefully for listeners, it strikes a deeper chord too. It saved our band, and we’re so grateful to be sharing these songs."

Recorded with Grammy-winning producer/engineer Stuart Sikes (Cat Power, Loretta Lynn, Modest Mouse) over the course of two weeks in the band's hometown of Austin, Texas, Other Nature allows Larson's hauntingly raw voice to shine. Whether she's going for hard-rock vocal strains on tracks like "Stop Resisting" or letting her subdued yet impassioned voice carry on the echoing "After the Show," Larson makes the songs' lyrics as evocative as the affecting sounds her bandmates (bassist Eric Larson and drummer Aaron Perez) create behind her.

The band will play a hometown show to celebrate the release of Other Nature on July 21, followed by a 17-date tour supporting The Sword.
