Not long after Stone Temple Pilots revealed X Factor finalist Jeff Gutt was the band's new lead singer, the resilient rockers shared "Meadow," their first single with the new vocalist. And today (Dec. 15), Billboard can share the lyric video to the first single from their upcoming 2018 album.

"Meadow" is one of the first songs STP worked on with Gutt, though guitarist Dean DeLeo tells Billboard the instrumental track was written and demoed even before Gutt auditioned for the group during September of 2016. "It was one of the songs we threw at Jeff when we started writing with him," DeLeo recalls. "We had that song tracked a little while back with Robert (DeLeo), Eric (Kretz) and myself, and we really threw (Gutt) right into the fire, man. We went to Robert's house and had the mic set up, like, 'OK, let's see what you got,' and ('Meadow') was one of the songs. He wrote a melody for it that day, along with about five other songs. It was very impressive."

Gutt, too, remembers "Meadow" as "part of my audition process," and a track that clicked with him right away. "It was really raw in the beginning," he says. "More than anything I tried to feel the music and let the music tell me where to go, and I never really tried to force anything. I was just going for vibe, and it wasn't about the lyrics right away. I was just mumbling kind of a melody, but most of that is what we ended up keeping and it got the ball rolling and I put the lyric in afterwards. I tried to just really go with what was given to me, and that's what came out."

DeLeo and Gutt say STP recorded 14 songs for the album, though it's likely not all will be part of the finished set. The guitarist adds that finding out Gutt was a good writing partner was key to STP's decision to formally hire him in June. "That's what really turned our heads with Jeff, when we started getting shoulder to shoulder and started writing and preparing for a new record," DeLeo explains. "He didn't have the gig at the time, but when we sat down together and wrote it was very evident he had a very good sensibility of what the song needed and what the song wanted, and that's what really interested us."

STP introduced Gutt during a private Nov. 14 concert at the Troubadour in Los Angeles. The new lineup's next tour begins March 2 with a combination of headline dates and festival appearances and more shows likely to be announced soon.
