Takeover Tuesday: Joywave Embraces Eclecticism on Pre-Show Playlist

Mary Ellen Matthews

Welcome back to Takeover Tuesday, where each week Billboard taps chart-topping artists and tastemakers to compile their very own playlist exclusive to Billboard's Spotify account. We give the artists free rein to base the list on whatever subject they choose. The only rule? Make it as creative and unique to them as possible.

This week, electro-rock outfit Joywave gives fans an inside look into the type of atmosphere they build before they hit the stage with their playlist titled, “Pre-Show Mix,” as they continue on their North American fall tour which just kicked off Nov. 11.

The members listen to the lineup of tracks during “the time of day where we all reconvene in the green room (or bus) an hour before we play to get revved up for the gig," the band members told Billboard. Metal and trap coexist on this eclectic playlist, which is all about psyching the group before their shows.

The mix of tracks reflects the band’s penchant for genre-bending sounds. Their disparate influences run deep as the title of their compilation album Swish is a reference to Kanye West’s The Life of Pablo, which was originally going to be called Swish. So it’s less surprising that the rapper is featured twice on their 22-track playlist.

The quintet dropped their sophomore album, Content, in July following the success of Big Data’s “Dangerous,” which Joywave frontman Daniel Armbruster co-wrote and sings.
