Sufjan Stevens released his incredible, harrowing album Carrie & Lowell two years ago, detailing his complex relationship with his late mother and coming to terms with her death. On Wednesday (Oct.11), he shared an unreleased song off it, “Wallowa Lake Monster,” that will be featured as one of four songs that were cut from the album in The Greatest Gift -- a mixtape that includes outtakes, demos, and remixes.

“Wallowa Lake Monster” is a gorgeous track tackling the theme of his tumultuous childhood, singing: “But have you heard the story of my mother’s fate?/ She left us in Detroit in the rain with a pillow case/ Fortune for the paper weight.”

The other new songs off the album are “The Hidden River of My Life,” “City of Roses,” and title track “The Greatest Gift." The album also includes remixes by Helado Negro, James McAlister (who collaborated with Stevens for Planetarium) and Doveman.
