Surf Rock Is Dead

Brooklyn-based duo Surf Rock Is Dead is destroying friendships and 60’s-era subgenres just to build them back up on their upcoming EP We Have No Friends? due out Oct. 6 via The Native Sound.

The duo, Kevin Pariso and Joel Witenberg, has built a reputation for tongue-in-cheek commentary and in-jokes -- look no further than their name -- and their latest EP is no exception. The title of the project refers to the limiting effect on a social life of styaing committed to the music grind.

We Have No Friends? is a commentary on the lives we lead,” the band tells Billboard. “New York City can be isolating and all inclusive simultaneously; choosing to jam-out with your band mates rather than making friends is just a small facet of the experience in a world where genuine connections with people are increasingly hard to find.”

The band proves their time experimenting has paid off with a 5-song set that pushes the confines of  genre. Whether it’s the glimmery guitar flourishes of shoegaze on “As If," the post-punk melancholy on “White Sea” or the surf-rock quirkiness in the melody for “Fitting The Mold,” Surf Rock is Dead shows a knack for finding a vibe and building a wall of sound around it with stray elements of various styles.

While the band might have lost a couple friends in the process, they stand to gain quite a few fans with their new EP. The album release show will take place at Rough Trade in Brooklyn on Oct. 6 before the duo head out the following week for a tour that kicks off on Oct. 13 in New Brunswick, N.J.
