Queen of Swords

Toronto-based songwriter/guitarist Aerin Fogel makes shadowy dream pop under the nom de plume Queen of Swords. Her self-titled debut LP is due Sept. 15 and today (Aug. 29) she’s premiering a triumphant garage rock nugget called “Family Ties.”

The Queen of Swords debut was produced by Bobb Bruno, best known for playing guitar and bass alongside Bethany Cosentino in Best Coast. Here, Fogel and Bruno turn a stripped-down, otherwise straight-ahead rock song into a heady, down ’n' dirty sonic experience with a heavy dose of guitar distortion. Amidst all the fuzz, the track digs deep into its writer’s subconscious. Fogel tells Billboard:

We are not separate from the history of our past and the stories of what our ancestors have come through. We face these family stories again and again, every day, while they sit below the surface of our consciousness like deep, old roots. We cannot undo the past, but we are capable in the present. "Family Ties" is a call to our strength, to let new light into the very old patterns we have been born into. There is hope with every dawn that history may not repeat itself and that we may take up the love in our families, whether they are blood or chosen.

Fogel is also the driving force behind Venus Fest, a feminist-minded music festival scheduled for Sept. 30 at Toronto’s Artscape Daniels Spectrum. She created, booked, and produced the fest, whose lineup includes Queen of Swords, Grouper, Weaves, and many others. Check out details on Venus Fest here
