Primus Returns: Hear the Rock Band's First New Song in Six Years & Get Album Details

Chapman Baehler

This fall, experimental rock legends Primus will return with their first proper studio album since 2011. And not only that, the new LP will be their first since 1995's Tales From The Punchbowl to feature the seminal lineup of bassist Les Claypool, guitarist Larry LaLonde and drummer Tim Alexander performing new Primus songs.

The new album is called The Desaturating Seven and it’s due Sept. 29 on ATO Records. Below, listen to “The Seven,” the first new track they’ve shared.

Rolling Stone reports the The Desaturating Seven was inspired by the storyline and artwork of an oddball children’s book called The Rainbow Goblins that Claypool used to read to his kids. Those goblins have already made it into the new song and its visuals. Apparently, Claypool considered putting it towards his other band, the Claypool Lennon Delirium, but after getting LaLonde and Alexander onboard, decided to build Primus’ new album around it.

Before this one, Claypool, LaLonde and Alexander got together to cover the soundtrack of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory for a 2014 album called Primus & the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble
