A day after his 74th birthday Wednesday (July 26), Mick Jagger surprised fans with a belated gift -- actually, three gifts: Two new songs and their videos, plus a remix featuring Skepta.

The Rolling Stones singer unveiled the politically charged "England Lost" and "Get a Grip" on Thursday (July 27), tweeting, "I started writing these two songs a few weeks back and wanted to get them out to you straight away."

"England Lost" is "about a feeling that we are in a difficult moment in our history," Jagger says in a statement. "It's about the unknowability about where you are and the feeling of insecurity."

And, regarding the message on "Gotta Get a Grip": "Despite all those things that are happening, you gotta get on with your own life, be yourself and attempt to create your own destiny."

There was a hint of Jagger's collaboration with Skepta earlier this month, when the British grime star posted a photo on Instagram with the frontman, captioned "in the studio."

"Right from the off when I started writing 'England Lost,' I imagined having a British rapper on the track," Jagger shares. "Skepta stepped in at a moment's notice, and I just loved what he did."

In an interview with Zane Lowe announcing the songs Thursday -- listen below -- Jagger talked about working with the rapper: "He really wants to get the best out of himself. He's quite serious in some ways, but funny."

He also talked about the Stones' progress on their next album: "We've been in the studio recording. All new songs. We've been working on that, and we'll keep working on it until we get it right."

The band's guitarist, Keith Richards, commented earlier in the week about their first album of original material in 12 years. After 2005's A Bigger Bang, the Stones released a covers album called Blue & Lonesome last year.
