Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails performs during of Pemberton Music and Arts Festival on July 18, 2014 in Pemberton, Canada.

Performing in Bakersfield, California, on Wednesday night (July 19), Nine Inch Nails surprised fans with a little David Bowie homage. About midway through the set, Trent Reznor and company debuted their live rendition of “I Can’t Give Everything Away,” the elegant final track on Bowie’s final album, Blackstar.

Nine Inch Nails stripped the original of its jazzy horns and cozy bed of strings, leaving little more than a minimal keyboard refrain for Reznor to sing over. Check out the fan-shot video below.

The Rabobank Arena concert was the band’s first show in three years, a recently-announced warm-up gig for their July 23 set at Los Angeles’ FYF Fest.

On Friday (July 21), Nine Inch Nails will release ADD VIOLENCE, the second installment in a series of three EPs, which began with last year’s Not the Actual Events. Check out the forthcoming release’s latest track "This Isn't the Place" here
