The Rocket Summer

The Rocket Summer mastermind Bryce Avary is taking his seminal 2007 album, Do You Feel, back on the road, and he's bringing some new material with him.

"Gone Too Long," available for the first time Friday (July 7) exclusively on Billboard, stands as another departure for the artist, just as he's starting a tour to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Do You Feel. On the latest song, the Texas native turns inward after getting the "feeling that maybe part of me drifted away from myself without ever really realizing it was happening at all along the way."

Avary has reason to get introspective as the anniversary tour looms, but the new track proves he is just as much of a force as ever. With a guitar-driven melody and impassioned lyrics, the one-man band is in top form in a song that will easily fit with the alt-pop tendencies of staples like "So Much Love" and "You Gotta Believe."

As for approaching the old material, the mid-'00s alt-rock revivalist is compromising his forward-thinking nature with an appreciation for the past by giving fans a bit of both on the upcoming tour.

"I'm really looking forward to celebrating the community we have and how this album in a way helped create that community," Avary says. "But I also just couldn't bring myself to go out on the road without putting out something new because my head is constantly in the new.

"Life is long, and I've got a lot of music to make. I know I'm still at the start of all of it so I didn't want the vibe of the summer to be too retrospective since that is definitely not what is to come," Avary teases.

The tour will feature performances of the complete Do You Feel album, along with favorites from The Rocket Summer's six studio albums and more. Avary, in particular, hopes to use the experience to push forward with a renewed focus.

"I can't wait to do this tour and then use the live show community energy as fuel to dive right back into the studio," he says. "Realistically, writing and working on new music is probably all I will be doing on the bus."

With his constant work ethic, it appears it won't be long until we hear from Avary again.
