Gavin Russom, synth wizard of LCD Soundsystem, has come out as a transgender woman.

In a recent interview with Grindr’s Into, the recording artist revealed that throughout her entire life, she has felt that she was a woman, and began coming out to friends, family, and her band mates earlier this year.

The 43-year-old musician said, “This is my fifth decade being alive and in each of those decades, there’s been a time where I’ve tried to say, ‘Hey, I think I’m transgender!’ This was even before that word existed.”

Russom said that she felt that now was the right time to come out, because she “could not imagine” spending this next year promoting LCD Soundsystem’s upcoming album American Dream as someone that she is not.

She added that the rest of LCD Soundsystem has been “really supportive” of her transition, and that “the general feeling in the group is that will make the band better.”

Though Russom said she is very happy and looks forward to what is next for the band, she ultimately hopes to use her platform to advocate for others in the trans community.
