New York-based indie group VHS Collection are ready to say goodbye to one person and hello to another in their new tune "So I Met Someone," premiering today (May 25) on Billboard. The song stays true to the band's groovy alt-rock vibe, but this time the topic isn't as jaunty as their music sounds.

While the title may sound like the VHS Collection guys are singing about turning their back on a lover after finding someone else, listening closely to the lyrics makes it clear that it's actually the lover who's the reason they're leaving: "So I met someone/ And I'm asking her to stay/ So I met someone/ Cause you drove me away," the band sings in the chorus.

The band explained the significance of the song in an email to Billboard, also touching on how their latest track switches things up a little bit for the band's sound. Take a look at what they had to say, and check out their upcoming tour dates below.

"'So I Met Someone' is about the bittersweet reality of standing in between an old relationship and a new one. The verses are woeful and nostalgic, the chorus is optimistic and celebratory, the bridge admits 'it's hard to say the feeling is gone.'

We changed up our genre a bit in this one. After a lot of dark, synth heavy disco-rock numbers, we wanted something with a different kind of energy. Pretty, dynamic, and smooth. It almost touches on boy-band R&B, without crossing the line. We liked the combo of intimate soulful piano ballad verses with a festival-banger chorus.

We're looking forward to releasing a lot more music which touches on a range of influences. Music isn't defined by genres anymore. We are completely independent, so we feel like we can make whatever music we want to. Our sound naturally evolves every few months, and we don't see any need to fight that."
