Morris Day Recalls Meeting Prince, Talks Paying Tribute to Lost Icon on New Song

One year ago today (April 21), Prince unexpectedly died at age 57. In tribute to his fallen friend, collaborator and Purple Rain costar, Morris Day recorded "Over That Rainbow," a touching ballad paying homage to the Purple One. The song is the first single from his upcoming solo album, which is executive produced by Snoop Dogg

"I was in the studio with Snoop working on some music when we got word that Prince had passed. It kind of detoured us," Day tells Billboard. "One of the songwriters involved in the process presented me with the song 'Over That Rainbow' and at first I said, 'Yo it's a beautiful song but I can't sing that song -- it's way too emotional, I like to keep my cool in check.' But it grew on me, and I eventually did do it."

Ahead of the song's official release, The Time frontman visited Billboard and sat down for a chat about "Over That Rainbow," his memories of meeting Prince, and what it was like finding out the world had lost the musical icon. Watch that interview above and check out the song below.
