Billie Joe Armstrong Walks a Lonely Road in Green Day's New 'Still Breathing' Video
Green Day got the ol’ superstar treatment at last night’s MTV EMAs, delivering two live performances and taking home Global Icon honors. The Rotterdam show was half lifetime achievement award, half present day observance, as Green Day got to perform its Revolution Radio single “Bang Bang” before closing the evening with 2004’s iconic “American Idiot.” Today (Nov. 7), they’ve kept up with promoting their 2016 album by sharing the music video for their earnest anthem “Still Breathing.”
This is a serious one. In “Still Breathing,” Billie Joe Armstrong likens himself to “a soldier coming home for the first time” and “an ambulance that's turning on the sirens,” so we know we’re delving into the songwriter’s sensitive, self-searching side. We find Armstrong wandering on his own in the video -- amongst several other lonesome characters -- eventually en route to bandmates Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool, who've been rocking out the whole time. Does Billie Joe have it in him to rock alongside them?
Revolution Radio dropped Oct. 8 and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, with 95,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Oct. 13, according to Nielsen Music. It was Green Day’s 12th studio effort and its third to top the 200. For more, dig into Green Day’s 2017 tour dates in support of the new album.
