Grouplove Behind the Scenes: One Big, Beautiful Mess

After two highly acclaimed albums, a string of successful singles and a whirlwind, non-stop tour that saw them play the biggest festival stages on the planet, Grouplove ended 2014 as one of indie-rock’s biggest and most bankable bands. But the wild ride to the top also left the five band-members and long-time friends a bit burned out, to say the least. So after finishing its 2014 co-headlining tour with Portugal. The Man, the members of Grouplove decided to leave the group behind for a stretch.

“It was the first time we had time off to reflect on the last few years of our life, which we were really humbled by, and just let life catch up to us,” says frontman Christian Zucconi. “We met up with some old friends we lost touch with, saw our families and wrote some new songs without a deadline in mind.”

During the hiatus, as the band refueled their tanks, Zucconi also found time to have a baby with wife and fellow Grouplove vocalist Hannah Hooper. But neither the new arrival nor the time off stopped the band members from tapping into their creative juices.

“We got to be artists again, which is why we’re doing this in the first place -- to make art and make music,” says Hooper. “So we did. We made this beautiful album. And it’s the best album we’ve ever written.”

Full of catchy, festival-ready gems like the anthemic first single “Welcome to Your Life,” Big Mess, Grouplove’s recently released third album full-length, is the triumphant result of the band’s refocused efforts. Billboard, in partnership with Cafe Bustelo (TM) caught up with the band at Chicago's North Coast festival, the first stop on a world tour that will take the band to North America, Europe and Australia through year’s end. Backstage, we found the band to be as lighthearted and in-sync as ever, once again excited about the road that lay ahead.

“I think the glue that keeps Groulove together is the show,” Hooper says. “We have this language onstage that’s just unbreakable. There’s a friendship there that’s beyond words. It’s the Grouplove magic.” Watch the video above to get a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the band, which is firmly back in business.
