Robert Smith of The Cure performs on stage at Eventim Apollo, Hammersmith on Dec. 21, 2014 in London.

Tuesday night (May 10), The Cure shook off the rust and played the first show of their North American tour -- their first live date since Dec. 2014. Robert Smith and company haven’t released a new album since 2008’s 4:13 Dream, but in announcing the tour, they piqued our interest by promising to pepper sets with rarities and unreleased tracks. In New Orleans last night, they delivered with a pair of brand new songs.

Early in the set, they performed one with an urgent, pounding chorus that’s being called “Step Into the Light.” About twenty tracks later, after a whopping three encores (according to Setlist.fm), they capped the evening with another newbie -- a droning, ponderous song that’s been dubbed “It Can Never Be the Same.”

Tonight, the Cure sticks around town with a second show at New Orleans’ UNO Lakefront Arena. They’ve got live dates on tap through December, so while it might be tough finding time for the studio, there’s plenty more opportunity for playing new material.
